Discussion 1 "COVID-19"

Dear all,
Welcome to our first online discussion about the country situation that we are living right now. It is really important that we all share our opinion respectfully and with correct vocabulary. Remember this will be a space that the school will have access too.

Now, regarding the topic that I'm proposing, what do you think about the rapid spread of this virus and people's reaction when it reached Stage 3-4 in our country? 😰
What could we do to prevent our family members from falling into this collective paranoia? 😕

Conspiracy or no, consumers nearly cleared the shelves of hand sanitizer and face masks.

Leave your comments below with your name and class ("Carla V. - 4M", for example), so I can check that everybody is commenting the topic. This activity requires everybody's participation and it will count as part of your responsibility grade 😁.

  5. I personally feel that people are not realizing the greatness of this virus. It seems to me that they try to control everything they have at their disposal (like buying everything they see in the supermarket) because we know that getting infected is uncontrollable. What could be avoidable is the collapse of the system and therefore all the measures that have been decreed. I feel that for now all the measures they have put in are extremely good: closing schools and universities for 14 days as well as shopping malls, restaurants, bars, pubs, cinemas, etc. in order to avoid contact with people.

  9. I think this epidemic was the result of lack of management from the governments, especially in Europe, because the measures taken were not the appropriated, and they tried to see this as a disease like any other, but unfortunately it was not.
Now we have to be extremely careful with the spreding, we have to take care of our family the best we can and respect the security measures.
These are times of madness, because we do not know what is to come, but we have to stay united and help each other, not leaving the rest exposed by hoarding resources, so that way, and luckily, the amount of cases does not continue growing.

I think that right now there's a thing where we are oversaturated with news and information that is not always true and sometimes is only trying to scare us or cause paranoia, I think that is important to control how much information we recive and to check the veracity of the information. We have the privilege to stay at home and have the resources to do so, so obviously we have to contribute and stay home especially now that the government is taking messures that in my opinion are not enough. We are not the risk group, we are not the ones that are going to have several complications if we get sick but we must have empathy and think of others.

I believe the best thing we can do is stay home so we can try to stop or at least slow down the spread of the virus. Some young people are putting the rest at risk because they don't understand that just because probably nothing will happen to them if they catch the virus other people could have really bad experiences and even die. 21. I think what is happening is serious. The spread of this virus is faster than I thought, since from one weekend to the next the number of infected people increased quite a bit.
I think that the reaction of young people (from my circle of friends) was good since there was automatically an awareness that you had to take it seriously and stay at home because it is the only way to keep it from spreading. that the rest of the people have taken it seriously. On the side of working adults, I think that the situation is much more complex than just staying at home, many Chileans need to work day by day to be able to eat, and for this reason, quarantine is a thousand times more complicated for them. which the goverment should take the letters of the matter and help those people financially so that a national quarantine is carried out as it should. As a society I do not think that it is taking it seriously as it should be, the government acts irresponsibly not decreeing a national quarantine and even that the health minister makes comments such as lowering the profile of the situation instead of devising a way of being able prepare hospitals and people for further spread.
We must stay in the house and be as hygienic as possible and wait for all this to happen.

Now related to it, it is true what you say that the government should help people, who need to work day by day to eat, by giving them some resources and in that form, we can have a full quarantine. In many ways, I believe similarly to you, that the government hasn't taken this situation as seriously as it should and that's why we're having certain consequences.

      Miss Carla,

  22. I think that the rapid spread of the virus was because a lot of people didn't take it seriously, maybe they were uninformed and didn't take the measures to prevent it. In Chile it expanded rapidly because the goverment didn't take inmediate measure, until today, which is hurting many people in every sense. The only thing we to do is staying in our houses. And perhaps it is a good time to strengthen ties with people who live in the same home, like family, grandparents, friends or partner. Also we have to avoid staying connected all day, we must distract ourselves as much as possible, reading, drawing, playing music, exercising, etc. Everybody is living a delicate situation.

  29. There are many hypothesis about how this started. We have the theory about the trade
war between China and The United States, we have the bat theory, the biological
weapon testing theory but we really don’t know the beginning. Italy is submerged in a
complete catastrophe, Spain is falling apart and now the Corona virus is infecting Latin
America. In Chile we are fighting (in my opinion) with two main enemies. First, the
world pandemic that is Covid-19. But no less important, our inoperative government
and especially our ministry of health. We have public hospitals without the necessary
medical supplies to help victims with this illness. We aren’t in a total quarantine and all
the jobs that can’t be done on a virtual way are exposing workers to danger of getting
sick. A lot of people need the money to feed their family, pay their bills and
fundamentally subsist. These people are exposed because of the selfish managing
choices that our government is making. The authorities are not easing the bills or their
due dates, so people can’t stay inside their homes keeping themselves safe. This is
terribly unfair, and all that we can do to help is stay inside our houses. I feel very
powerless. I see mothers in prison pleading for their children not be taken to the
Sename. I see immigrants in the street and I think, what will happen to them if they
catch the Corona virus? Their situations are precarious and there is not much ordinary
citizens can do about it. I give supplies to hospitals, I constantly keep myself updated
on the news, I keep myself informed, but I feel powerless. Absolutley powerless. It’s
devastating seeing how a group of people tonly think about their wallets, even if there
are people dying on the street. We can clearly see how selfish and unfair our
government is.- Javiera Ruiz 4to B

It is an important issue and the government has not given it the weight it deserves, giving greater importance to things such as a curfew or painting plaza dignidad instead of caring for the people and decreeing necessary things as a total quarantine, because that It is useful to have a partial quarantine if there are still people who have to go to work and take the subway.

  31. I think that the Covid-19 is not as strong as many people thinks, I mean, in China the virus wasn´t very massive, and they stopped it fast, the real problem is the quantity of people infected, and the speed of its spread, in Chile we are having +100 infections per day since we had 200 infections, and i think this is because our government is unqualified to have this crisis. In Santiago at least the people don´t know so good the proceedments, they bought masks when we didn´t have infections, and now that we have a lot we don´t have masks to use. Another problem is that the mean people is using the crisis as a way to earn money, selling fake alcohol gel or just raiding a bank.

    2. I agree with you when you said that the virus isn't as strong as we believe, because molecularly speaking it doesn't have many chances of surviving in certain environmental contexts, the problem is to contain its propagation, that is key to solve this issue.

  38. As this virus is a recent thread to humanity, it is a very complex thing to analyze. Researchers and investigators around the world are just beginning to get conclusions about the virus.

South American countries have been later exposed to the virus than Asian or European countries, this gives us some advantage as we can use their experience and follow successful examples of countries who have a minor contagion rate or fastest decrease in infected people.

    Some of them are:
Young people need to take care of the elder, this is the group that has more health complications if infected with Covid-19.

Second, everyone has to follow the rules of their governments and health organizations. Is crucial to stay at home, keep high hygiene measures and avoid direct contact with others.

It is also important to filter news; avoid fake news and always check the author of the information we share with others. Fake news may generate panic and push people into buying all in the supermarket and leave others with nothing.
    ¿What can we do?
Don´t share fake news and buy only what is necessary for you.

  39. The coronavirus is a big thread to any country if it isn't managed as it should. It's necessary to give the population the idea of responsability about self-quarantine. For these, also the government has to make them been sure of being able to survive too a quarantine without working, having food, and knowing that if they get coronavirus with hard symptoms, they will have space in a hospital, but these won't happen in Chile, because the president and his gabinet give more importance to the economy than the people who elected him. The managment of the crisis has been awful, and ending the crisis, the minister of health, Jaime Mañalich must be removed inmediatly, this just because of his managment of the crisis without thinking in his other mistakes as minister and after being minister.

something very important is that approximately the test are taking 70 hours and of the 1140 peoples with coronavirus have symptoms, that is to say that there are too many people without knowing that they have coronavirus infecting many more people.
therefore it is very important that total quarantine be declared

    1. I agree with almost everything, Maki, I think that it is really important that we identify all the people who are carrying the virus and that could help it spread faster. But having a total quarantine seems a bit complicated as it is hard to "stop" a whole country. Although it may mean the solution to this problem.

In terms of grammar, be careful with adding "s" to "people", the word people is already plural, so no "s" needed.

  46. I think everyone was being way too paranoid especially when they filled every supermarket and took all the toilet paper. They should've bought only what they needed and leave stuff for others too. Everyone should stay home, only go out when it's necessary, take the precautions needed like washing our hands and stay calm.

  48. I think that people was being very selfish because there were a lot of people in the supermarket buying a lot of things for them, more than they needed to live.
Our familys can be prey of all this panic and selfness but if this happens we need to tell them that everything is going to be alright and that we don't need to buy more than we need to live.
Personally I think that coronavirus is just going to pass with the time and that if we care for our loved ones we should be responsable and dont go out of our homes except to buy things and food.

  49. The coronavirus has becomed a pandemie. Making that our countrie decided to be in stage 4. That had bigs consequences in the public order. People is stress and desperate to buy more toilet paper as needed, when that won't stop the virus at the moment of infection. To stop this masive stress we have to inform about the sintoms, the ways to get infected and how to prevent them. Also we have to take care of us and the others, by staying in ours houses without leaving them. Being in quarantine. That's the best way to prevent the spread of the virus. We have to stay calm, stay tunned to every information of the virus, and, be aware that we are in a privileged situation and we have to be supportive.

  50. I think the government have been irresponsible, should have started talking strict precautions at the begging, if we observe our curve we can see it is very very concerning and we should have started quarantine a long time ago to make it more even. My advice it´s just the usual, stay home and wash your hands ;)

  53. In my opinion I think that there should be more health care measures, extending the quarantine for all the country and not only for some districts, because unfortunately not everyone is responsible and there are still some people who go outside.
The most important thing is to stay in our homes so we don’t keep spreading the virus.
One of the things that I’m really worried about is what is going to happen with all the people who can’t go to their jobs and they can’t make more incomes to pay all their needs. I really hope that we can find a solution for this problem as soon as possible.

  54. I think panic is the worst thing that can happen in this type of situation and more in the case of grandparents. What we could do is avoid checking new information all the time. How to watch tv. To avoid so much fear.

  55. I don't thing we (specialy us, the kids) shoud be afraid. For us it's nothing but a
flu cousin. BUT I need to clerify one point, I don't mean we shoud go somewhere like "¡hey de coronavirus doesn't affect me so I can go everywhere fearless!" NO. It's more like respect what we should have, beacause it can't affect you that much, BUT you become a transmitter of the virus and you can infect more people. So we don't have to feat it, but we also need to take care of ourselves. Wash your hands at least 20 seconds bois!

  56. The rapid spread of this virus is very therrifying but we don't have to lost the control of our emotions and we obviously should stay at home and don't go out never (only for special cases). Also we really need to wash our hands more often and minimum 20 seconds. About the stage 4 it's so sad and im a litlle bit scared for the older people mainly for my grandparents but I know we are going to be fine in a few mounths, I hope so :). the computer classes are very strange and i don't like them so much but we have to accept it and do our job. bye and stay at home :-) Diego Vicencio 1M-A

  58. I believe that there was a large number of infections in a short time because the state itself did not take measures from the beginning, for example the mall closed them us a few days later. We must not only be in solidarity when buying but also with the community that surrounds us, for example neighbors, relatives, etc. since we do not have as much risk as others close to you may have.

My view of the government in this situation is that they do not take sufficient and necessary action on the virus. 65. I think one of the most important causes of the rapid spreading of this virus is people who should be in quarantine and are not doing it, like the guy who took a plane when he should have been in isolation, or the woman who got bored of being in quarantine and went to a mall, and many more who aren't taking this as serious as they should. 66. Well, I think that this situation can become a worse situation than we imagine, if we dont take the necessary measures such as respecting quarantine, washing hands, etc. I also think that the governmet should focus more on people's health than on the economic stability of the country.

  67. I think that this situation is very complicated and we have to take care about us. I think that we have to being in quarantine for 2 weeks and wash our hands. Also, We have to keep in contact with persons we love but online, to avoid more infections.

  69. I think that due to the "delay" in the delivery of information to people, people reacted without thinking and that collective paranoia was created and caused many people to supply themselves unnecessarily. And also people did not think it alone.

  70. The rapid spread is a consequence of the irresponsibility (first) of gobernements, and then from people. We need to know that when the people in charge make mistakes or take good decisions is normal people who has to pay for that. We have to know also that there are people who really can’t stay at home, so people that can stay, must do it. That way hospitals won’t collapse and we all are going to put end to this situation. The best way to solve this pandemic is beeing responsible and know our country situation so we can empatize.
