  1. 1917 (2019)

The film 1917 is based on an event that happened on the first world war. The film was directed by Sam Mendes. It stars George MacKay as William Schofield and Dean-Charles Chapman as Tom Blake. The film won a lot of awards like Oscars, Gold Gloves and others.
The film is set in the north region of France in 1917. It was filmed on location in England and Scotland.
The film tells the story of two young British soldiers during the First World War who are ordered to deliver a message calling off an attack doomed to fail soon after the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich in 1917. This message is especially important to one of the soldiers, as his brother is taking part in the pending attack.
I strongly recommend 1917. His photography and ambientation are one of the best that I have ever seen. The thing that I love most of the photography is that is made with a lot of long takes to make you think that the movie is made with one continuous take. I give to the movie 5 stars.

  2. La La Land (2016)
The film La La Land was written and directed by Damien Chazelle, who also directed the Oscar winning movie for Best Film, Whiplash. It stars Emma Stone as Mia and Ryan Gosling as Sebastian. The film won five Oscars in 2017 for Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Soundtrack, Best Photography, Best Director, Best Production Design. The film is set in Los Angeles from August to September of 2015. It was filmed on location in Los Angeles, including the Angels Flight trolley in downtown, houses in the Hollywood Hills, Colorado Street Bridge, Griffith Observatory, etc.
The film is about Sebastian, a jazz pianist, and Mia, an aspiring actress. They fall madly in love. But the excessive ambition they have to succeed in their respective careers, in a city like Los Angeles, full of competition and lacking in mercy, puts their love in danger.
I strongly recommend La La Land. It is a beautiful musical. It has romance, drama, and an unforgettable soundtrack. And the message about the dreams, the passion and the life in pair is very important. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

  3. Whiplash (2014)
The award-winning film Whiplash was directed by Damien Chazelle, who also directed La La Land (2016) and First Man (2018). It stars J.K. Simmons as Terence Fletcher and Miles Teller as Andrew Neiman. The film won three Oscars for Best Supporting Actor, Best Montage and Best Sound, it also won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for J.K. Simmons.
The film is set in New York in the present time and was filmed in Los Ángeles.
The film is about Andrew Neiman, a first year jazz drummer student in Shaffer Conservatory who is invited by the famous orchestra director Terence Fletcher to play with his Studio Band, but Fletcher is excessively mean with his students, so much that he abused and left Andrew crying. Which Andrew takes as a fail and forces himself to exceed his limits and demonstrate Fletcher that he can play both of his class’s songs Whiplash and Caravan by heart.
I strongly recommend Whiplash, its drama, suspense and beautiful music are the magnum opus of contemporary music movies, that without talking about the actors, who are amazingly committed to his jobs. I give the film a strong five out of five stars.

  4. “Pulp Fiction” Is an American film from 1994, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, the plot is based on stories that he wrote himself in collaboration with Roger Avary during 1992 and 1993. Starring Jhon Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman and Bruce Willis as the main protagonists, this film is considered to be one of the most iconic Tarantino films and it won The Oscar for “Best original script” in 1994.

The film is set in Los Angeles, CA around the 1980´s and it was filmed in the same city. It tells three intertwined stories in a non cronological order about the life of people that take part on organized crime in Los Angeles. It starts with the story of two hitmans; Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) and his partner Vincent Vega (Jhon Travolta) who work for a dangerous man called Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames). After Jules and Vincent return from doing dirty work for his boss. Wallace asks Vincent if he could give his wife Mia (Uma Thurman) some company while he is out of town. Vincent accepts and he takes Mia out to dinner, because of this we get to see the normality of drug abuse in wealthy people caracteristic of the 1980´s. The story takes a twist when Butch (Bruce Willis) a boxer in the end of his career, who was payed by Marsellus to lose his last fight, does the opposite and ends up killing his oponent. . Marsellus gets furious and being the boss he is, he puts Vincent in charge of handling Butch.

I strongly recommend “Pulp Fiction”. Between the combination of action and comedy, the aesthetic vintage visuals, the attention to details, the unusual cronological order, and the unforgettable sound track I think it makes up to be the perfect film and I would give it five out of five stars.

  6. Call me by your name (2017)

The film “Call me by your name” is based on the book with the same name that was written by André Aciman. The movie is directed by Luca Guadagnino and starred by the actor Armie Hammer as Oliver and the new revelation actor Timothée Chalamet as Elio Perlmann. The movie was filmed in Crema, Italy and the story takes place somewhere in northern Italy in the summer of 1983. Young 17 years old Elio lives with his family in a 17th century villa. Oliver, a charming 24 years old American, arrives into town to work with Elio´s father. As the summer progresses, in this charming and beautiful environment Elio and Oliver discover the passionate love that they feel for each other.

The soundtrack was also very good and it helps set the ambience of the 80´s.The movie received three Oscar nominations and won best adapted screenplay.

I truly recommend this movie because in my opinion it is one of the best movies of 2017. It shows a tragic romance story that makes you fond with the characters and feel what they feel. It shows a homosexual relationship that probably will make some people change their opinion about this kind of attractions. It also will make some LGBTQ+ people feel related and accepted. The end makes you want to know what happens next. You will fall in love with the movie so much that you will watch it over and over. I give it five out of five stars.

  7. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (2004)

The film “Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind” was directed by Michel Gondry and written by Charlie Kaufman. It stars Jim Carrey as Joel, and Kate Winslet as Clementine. The film won several awards for Best Actress and Actor, Best Movie, Best script, among others. This film is set in the New York of 2004, but most of the time it is developing inside of Joel´s (Jim Carrey) mind.
The film is about Joel´s and Clementine´s relationship. They met after having a weird need of travelling to Montauk, even though they had opposite personalities they conected almost immediatley. After a two year relationship they broke up, which leads Clementine into going to a clinic that erases people off of their mind. This event makes Joel extremely upset so he decides he is going to do the same thing. While he is in the procedure, his mind is dreaming about all the memories he had with her, starting with the end of the relationship. As he starts to relive the happiests moments with Clementine he realizes that he wants to keep at least one memory of her, so it starts the battle with his mind.
I truly recommend “Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind” it´s drama, romance and science fiction. It is the kind of movie that leaves you thinking on your own life. The film also gives a message about the lack of excitement in the lives of those who are too afraid.
    Five out of five stars.

  8. KILL BILL vol. I

Kill Bill has been one of the most famous movies of the XXI century. This film was directed by American famous filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, in 2003. It starts Uma Thurman, as Beatrix Kiddo or The Bride, David Carradine, as Bill, Lucy Lu, Vivica A. Kill Bill is located in El Paso, Texas, where The Bride was almost killed, and after the story continues in Tokyo, Japan, where The Bride seeks for revenge. The aesthetic of the movie is inspired in the 70’s decade, the grindhouse cinema -as those low budget horror movies- and martial arts films.

This film starts with the shooting of a pregnant bride during her wedding rehearsal. She survived the shooting but when she woke up from the coma, she realized that her unborned baby has died. The terrible experience filled her with anger, hate and sense of revenge.
It has been four years now from the assassination of her baby, and “The Bride” begins a journey to kill all of her former partners of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad that betrayed and attacked her. She first finds Vernita Green to whom she fights just in front of her daughter’s eyes, killing her. But her most wanted target is O-Ren, the leader of the yakuza world in Japan, whom at age 11 saw the murderer of her parents and, after that, is deadly lethal. To kill O-Ren Beatrix must master the katana sword under the teachings of samurai Hattori Hanzo and she finally kills O-Ren in an epic fight in the snow.

I strongly recommend Kill Bill, as a classic that you must watch, because it has a really interesting plot, a wonderful soundtrack and the acting of this particular film is amazing. Although Kill Bill blew my head, I warn sensitive audiences because of it’s extreme violence.

  12. Se7en (1995)
“Seven” (stylized as Se7en) is a thriller film written by Andrew Kevin Walker and directed by David Fincher. It stars Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt as detective Somerset and detective Mills and Kevin Spacey as the killer John Doe. The film was nominated and won a great number of prizes, being some of the most remarkable the nomination to the Academy Awards for “Best Film Editing” and the nomination to the BAFTA’s for “Best Original Screenplay”.
The film is set on a fictitious city called Metro, which is inspired by New York in the 1990s. The setting is meant to represent a decadent city corroded by its society’s poor morals. Most it was filmed in Los Angeles, California with the last scene being shot near Lancaster.
The film tells the story of two detectives investigating a series of murders based off the seven deadly sins. One of them is William Somerset, a very cultivated and thoughtful investigator who is about to retire. On the other hand, there is David Mills, an explosive and very short-tempered young man that was recently transferred to Metro, moving there with his wife and dogs. The murders start with gluttony, presented in a gruesome scene that sets the style of the next murders, all being very elaborated presentations depicting each sin.
I adore this film. I believe it is grandiosely made. The acting is spectacular, especially Kevin Spacey depiction of the murder, a careful, patient, and vile psychopath that has meticulously planned these murders. The end of the film it’s heart-breaking and upsetting but it is magnificent. I strongly recommend this film to almost everyone, except people who cannot stand graphic depictions of violence and murder scenes. With that said, I leave this recommendation for you, I seriously hope you take the time to watch this masterpiece of thriller cinema.

  18. Logan (2017)
The film “Logan” is based on the comic book character Wolverine and is part of the X-Men saga. It was directed by James Mangold, who also directed “The Wolverine” (2013), and “Ford v Ferrari” (2019) which won an Oscar for Best Film Editing and Best Sound Editing on February of 2020. The film is about Logan, a mutant, whose powers of self-healing are dwindling. In an age where mutant children have not been born in years, He must help a mutant girl get to North Dakota escaping from sinister figures working for a powerful corporation.
If you enjoy action films plenty of emotion and astonishing fight scenes, I would definitely recommend you watch this film. Although perhaps if you do not previously have a little bit of knowledge about the X-Men, “Logan” may be a bit confusing for you. So if you would like to see this movie, I recommend you to watch some of the movies from the X-Men saga beforehand, for a better comprehension of the film. Aside from that, I would rate this film 4.5 stars out of 5.

  19. Réquiem for a dream (2000)

The film “Réquiem for a dream” is based on the book by Humbert Selby Jr, who wrote it in 1987. The film was directed by Darren Aronofsky. It starts Jared Leto as Harry Goldfarb, Jennifer Connelly as his girlfriend, Marion Silver, and Ellen Burstyn as his mother, Sara. The latter, nominated for best actress in the Oscars and the Golden globe awards.

The film is set in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, in the 2000s. It was filmed in Ney York and Florida.

The film is divided into three seasons, summer, autumn and winter to demonstrate the changes that the characters undergo as time passes. The story is about Harry and how along with his girlfriend Marion and his best friend Tyrone, they manage to get drugs. Harry is addicted to heroin just like them and does everything in his power to get money to buy it. He sells items from his mother's house to a thrift store and then she goes and retrieves them. The three of them become aware of the life they lead, so one day they decide to start selling drugs in order to raise money and be able to lead better lives. On the other hand, Harry's mother, Sara, after her husband passed away and her son left home, feels very lonely. Her only hobbies are eating sweets and watching her favorite television show. One day, Sara receives an anonymous call inviting her to participate in this show, so she is very happy. Wanting to please the people in the program, Sara decides to go to the doctor so that he can prescribe pills to replace meals so she can lose weight. She becomes obsessed with amphetamine use and eventually becomes addicted. As the story unfolds, you can see how the characters loop into each other when they use drugs and how they become more dependent over time. With great ideas in mind and dreams to fulfill, these characters are left to see that their plans to emerge and their desire to leave addictions are spoiled along the way.

“Requiem for a dream” is one of my favorite movies and I recommend it very much. It has a very original story, drama, the cast knows exactly how to play each character and it has an incredible soundtrack. I believe that the purpose of this film is to show how people can become dependent on very harmful substances, by the fact of looking for small moments of happiness, escaping from reality for short periods of time. I give it five out of five stars

  22. Film review : 'Léon: the professional'

This action thriller film was directed by Luc Besson and it stars Jean Reno as Léon Montana, Natalie Portman in her film debut as Mathilda and Gary Oldman as Norman Stansfield. It was premiered under the original name of 'The Professional' in 1994.
The film places us in the lonely New York life of Léon, a hitman who refers to himself as 'a cleaner'. One day, he meets a 12-year-old girl named Mathilda. She's his neighbor and lives in a dysfunctional family with an abusive father that gets into a big trouble with the 'Drug Enforcement Administration' (DEA) after they discovered he has been cutting some cocaine to keep for himself, instead of saving it as he should have, because it was the job they paid him for. Then, a group of DEA agents enter Mathilda's apartment and murder her whole family while she's shopping for groceries. Léon hides her and hesitates about giving her shelter until Mathilda discovers Léon's business and begs him to teach her his skills because she wants to avenge the murder of her little brother.

I like this film very much as I love its characters in special Léon. I think he's just amazing. Also, I think it has a good soundtrack that invite us to delve into this story that, as the film unfolds, it shows us new facets of each character. I give it five out of five stars.
I recommend it to you if you like action and if you would like to see a nice development iconic characters.

  25. The mystery of henry pick (2019)

The mystery of Henry Pick, also sometimes referred to as "The library of rejected manuscripts", is a french comedy based on the homonymous book by David Foenkinos. Released in 2019, it was directed by Rémi Bezançon. The cast is conformed by Fabrice Luchini as Jean-Michel Rouche, Camille Cottin as Joséphine Pick, Alice Isaaz as Daphné Despero, Bastien Bouillon as Fred Koskas, Astrid Whettnall as Inès de Crécy and Josiane Stoléru as Madeleine Pick.
Both staged and filmed between Paris and Crozon, a small town in the province of Bretagne, the film narrates the story of a nearly retired french literature critic and host of a television critique show, Jean-Michel Rouche, who loses his job after interviewing the widow of who was newly discovered author, Henry Pick, about the absolutely brilliant manuscript believed to be the only one he ever wrote before dying. Jean-Michel confronts the widow, Madeleine, about what he suspects is a blatant falsification. He arguments that in reality, Henry pick was nothing but a self-instructed pizza chef in a small town at Bretagne, and that there was no evidence that such man ever actually wrote any text. The widow, naturally, exits the show hosted by Jean- Michel in incredibly histrionic manners, leaving a confused Jean-Michel jobless (and soon, dumped by his wife because of the scandal) on air at national television. Jean-Michel sooner than later becomes obsessed with unmasking the true author of the mysterious book and, alongside Pick's strong willed daughter Josephine, will engage in a journey of deception and forgotten tragic stories that will eventually lead them to the obscure origins of the institution where the manuscript was first found, the Library of rejected manuscripts.
This film is absolutely perfect for those who fancy this ambiguous combination between an interesting thriller, a silly comedy and a pinch of dark depressive french humor. Entertaining, hilarious and emotional, this movie captures with a creative light the cultural subtleties between parisians and bretons while maintaining you off the first half of your chair. Definitely five out of five stars

  27. The Breakfast Club (1985)

John Hughes who also directed Beethoven (1992), wrote and directed this1980s high school drama.
Trapped in a day-long Saturday detention in a school library in the United States are Claire, the princess (Molly Ringwald); Andrew, the athlete (Emilio Estevez); John, the criminal (Judd Nelson); Brian, the nerd (Anthony Michael Hall); and Allison, the weirdo (Ally Sheedy). These five strangers begin the day with nothing in common, each bound to his/her place in the high school system. Yet the students bond together when faced with the villainous principal (Paul Gleason), and they realize that they have more in common than they may think, including a contempt for adult society.
I really like this movie, I think all teens should watch it, because we can relate to the issues that they are talking about in the film. It also teaches us to not judge by stereotypes. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. Eloisa Susacasa

  28. “The Parent Trap” (1998) is a classic Disney movie, super funny and with a really catchy story. It is based on the children's book “Las dos Carlotas”.
The movie starts in a girls camp on EEUU.The rest of the film takes place between the vines in California and a fancy London.

The plot is about two girls, masterfully starred by Lindsay Lohan, that met eachother at the Walden Girls Camp and find out that they are twins that had been separeted. So they decide to exchange so that each one can meet the other parent. Hallie leaves for London as Annie to meet her mother (Natasha Richardson) and Annie leaves for California as Hallie looking to meet his father (Dennis Quaid). But there he discovers that his father has been seduced by a young woman with whom he is going to marry. So the twins come up with a plan to reunite their parents. And so to reunite the family and live together.

The film is very funny and witty. Ideal to see with family with friends or with whoever you want. A film to see many times thanks to the very good performances and an excellent script. The secondary characters they were very funny and contributed a lot to the plot.

Finally we can say that it is a classic for very good reasons And highly recommended for anyone who enjoys healthy comedy.

  29. the joker (2019)
the joker is a suspense film directed by Todd Philips. The main character is the joker interpreted by Joaquin phoenix.
The story is set in Gotham city. A city where is contaminated and rules the crime. the main protagonist is a clown with psychological problems and with a series of events he decided to start a revolution against the high class of the city,
The other characters are important to the story and the development of his mental health. His mother penny fleck interpreted by Frances Conroy and his favorite comedian Murray frank by Robert de Niro are the most important ones.
It is a good film if you want to watch a good and complex character with a dark story. I recommend not watching it with kids because there is blood and curse words. It is not necessary to understand other DC comics stories, very good but not perfect 4.5/5.

  30. Kong: skull island is an action, fantasy and adventure movie directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and released in 2017. The film is about an expedition to a unknowed island in the pacific sea commanded by a cientific from the U.S.A. government named Bill Randa (John Goodman) who says that the future of the evolution could be there. He goes with an army team that are arriving from the vietnam war, commanded by Preston Packard(Samuel L. Jackson) the villian of the movie. Also there's Mason Weaver (Brie Larson),a war photographer that is the main character, and captain James Connor (Tom Hiddleston): a british mercenary.
They have a lots of adventures trought the island, attacked by enormous creatures like king kong. Then, they know a world war II american pilot named Hank Marlow (John C. Reilly) who arrived to this island a lot of years ago. He explains that king kong is the protector of the island and they don't have to kill it, but Packard ignores him without knowing that there are other creatures more dangerous and agresives than king kong. The movie was filmed in hawaii and mainly in Vietnam between 2015 and 2017. I think it's a very good movie to see for the people who loves action and are interested in the monsterverse (godzilla and king kong) it has very well developed action scenes and it will keep you glued to the seat.
