BBC documentary: Trading Ages – EFL Takeaways

Hi students!

We have been reading and listening what it means being old and what  conclusions we would make if we could trade ages with the elderly.
Watch the second episode of the BBC series and post your comments on the blog.

  1. I think that the whole experience of putting yourself in the place of the elderly is very interesting and innovative because one can never fully imagine what it is like to suffer their physical pain, age discrimination, among other things. I think if I had the opportunity to do something like this I would do it without hesitation because I want to know what the future has in store for me.

  3. I think it is really difficult to empathize with old people because their issues are extremely different from young people's problems, but I think the lack of empathy towards the elderly is is something that doesn't get as much attention as it should considering the amount of old people in the current society. The exponential advance in medicine and science in general provokes society's aging, therefore the are more old people than young people, and it is really unfair how you get treated differently and become partially invisible as the years pass. For young people like me sometimes it gets sort of annoying to interact with elders because they are from a another generation and perceive the world differently, but everyone should treat elders with respect because they have lived a lot and have lots of experience, and some day all of us will be old and of course we would like to be respected and loved.

  4. I think it is very important how Karoline learned the way that elderly people see and experience the same as her. That new perspective about the things that the elderly feel when talking about romance is very interesting. Viewing the way young people treat seniors is a good learning process for Karoline, so that way she can stop being afraid of what the future holds for her and realize that she is still the same person, just in an older body.

  5. I think that it is very interesting and also a little bit worrying and sad the life of these elderly people. Sadly, in most of cases, these people run out of love and careness of the society and even of theirs own family that do not come to see them again. But in this video we can see that elderly people are important too, they feel and love like everyone else. Another very interesting point exposed in this reportage it's that elderly people also fall in love and get the heart broken, like everybody else.

  6. I think that the experience of really knowing what it is like to be an elderly person, changed completely the perspective of the actress, it changed completely the way she sees them, she thought that elderly people were like washed out, like they couldn't have the same emotions as young people, but know she realized that is nothing like she thought, that elderly people can also fall in love or get there heart broken for example, they can feel almost everything that young people do, and I think that made the actress less scared of becoming an elderly women.

  7. I think that young people don’t really know what is like to be old and I think this experience is really interesting. It allows you to see the elderly world form a different perspective, an old person. It teaches you that old people are just normal people that have emotions, feels and also enjoy some things that young people also enjoys. It’s true that as you grow older you may lose you eye sight and your ability to move as freely as before, but you are still human. In conclusion the only difference between young and old people is the age.

  8. I think that young people find it really difficult to understand and empathize with old people, like Karoline used to feel, because we don’t know what is like to be old, and the problem is that we cannot know how it actually is until we get old. That’s why I found this experiment really helpful, to be able to experience this can help you realize how is their daily life and what is like to be in their place, they also need love and affection like we do. If young people were to realize that old people are just like us but with a few more years, they could easily end up enjoying some quality time with them.

  9. I think it's very interesting how Karoline changes her way of seeing elderly people by pretending to be one of them. Karoline 's thinking about the eldery represent the majority, is unimaginable think that elderly people talk about the same things as young people, but is the reality and young people should stop treating older people as they do and start to empathize with them. I liked the video because it makes us change the way we see the elderly and it's the first step to start treating them well.

  10. I think it is impressive to see Karoline changing his mind about the elder. It is really pleasent that she slowly regrets about how she thought before and starts valoring getting older, like something that is just an escencial part of life and not about being an alien like she first said, I think that's the most important point because at first she thought that she wanted to be young for ever, but that is an imposible thing and she gets less scared about getting older.

  11. I understand now the fear that Karoline had for elderly people, because she tells us that it isn't the fear of the elderly, she fears getting old and not having a family to love or to take care of her. It's really depressing how lonely and lacking affection most elderly people's lives are. A big percentage of the elderly don't have families to take care of them or to visit them, or have families that don't pay them enough attention. The video certainly made me change my vision on elderly people, now I know how sad their current lives can be so i can understand them better.

  12. Personally, i think it is very sad to watch how elder people can be so lonely, to the point where not even the family of the person gives them a little of time, or visits them. Or like some people who are rude to them, like to not give them attention or being disrespectful. In my opinion, we should be more empathic to the elder, because one day, we will be in the same position, being old and feel lonely. so we should care more and be more respecful, even though we are from diferent generations, but both can learn from each other.

  13. I think that is impressing how little we know about elderly people´s life in general, it´s crazy how stereotyped is the life of elderly people, to the point that Karoline is impressed by what they talk. But also is sad to see older people so lonely in some cases, to see people who don´t have a family to take care of them, to visit them and help monetarily to improve their quality of life.

  14. I found this episode very interesting because I feel a bit like the protagonist. I don’t really sympathize with the elderly and watching the episode made me empathize with their situation and see how they are discriminated with no reason. Maybe I feel that way because I see them so vulnerable and I'm afraid of getting old. I also don’t know a lot of old people because I'm not very near to my grandparents. In my opinion we should change our behavior because it also will help us to deal with our own issues.

  15. I think that she has a lot of prejudges about old people and their life style. It may be because she was so focused on the thing that she didn´t like about elder people that she forgot that they feel just like the rest of us. I also think that her fear to old people has affected a lot her life because she didn`t saw her grandmother in a very long time and that’s definitely not okay.

  16. I really liked this video and it made me appreciate old age in a different way. The way that the protagonist manages to empathize with the elderly people, and when she discovers that they can also have broken hearts, in a certain way it also broke mine. I feel like we will never know what it feels like to get old until we really find ourselves in the position, however this video is aproof that you can be old, happy, and profit from it. We should not forget that aging can also be very difficult, if there is no one accompanying us and giving us love, so we should not be left our family’s because this can hurt us and them lot, we have to stay together. My favorite part was when Karoline spoke with the young people and they treated her in a totally normal way, only in that moment I felt that she noticed that growing is part of life. -martina serrano

  17. I think the video teaches us something very important, even though old people can be stressing sometimes, the are still people and they are intelligent human beings. Usually, we treat the elderly like little kids, we speak to them slowly, we don't mind when they say they're hurt, and we easily get mad at them. It can be really stressing to talk to someone who's a little deaf, but that doesn't mean we can get angry at them and yell at them. The video teaches us to accept old people as we accept our selves, they are people and they should be treated nicely.

  18. I think this series is very entertaining but also mind-opening, because it shows a side of the elderly that we don't normally analyze that much, which can lead to a situation like the protagonist's, where she is just afraid of a part of life that can be very beautiful and special, because she doesn't know a lot about it. I also think that the protagonist's fear is not as weird as it is shown to the audience; she is just afraid of loneliness, and I think we all are to a certain degree.

  19. I think the experience of the actress putting herself in the role of an older person changed the actress's thinking. Feel their pain and all the difficulties they go through, as well as how they are treated in general, discriminating against them because of their age. Also learn that older people can also be heartbroken and that they can feel everything young people feel and even more. If I were offered the opportunity to do something like that in the future, I would do it without thinking it , I have always wanted to know what my life could be like when I grow up.

  20. I think this documentary is really interesting because you are able to see how someone who actually was afraid of the elderly and getting old experiences all what it comes with being old, the physical difficulties, the feelings that you have when you are old, etc. It was really emotional for me to watch this specially when an old lady cries because all that she wants is to be loved and when Karoline visits her grandmother and starts crying because she can't have children. Overall i think it´s super interesting to see how Karoline gets to know a lot of experiences from old people and get closer to know what it feels like to be old. I'm personally scared of growing up because of all of the difficulties that come with being old, but i know i'll be prepared when it comes.

  21. I have never seen something like this before, I think this is the first documentary or tv show I know that shows how old people live from their perspective. I wasn´t surprised by most things they said and I imagine how lonely they might feel. It's kind of scary to imagine myself like that, I have always said that I don´t want to be so old that I can't enjoy life, or be self-sufficient. I think the most important thing is that when I am old, I want to look back and think that I didn´t waste my life and my time, I want to look back and think that I took every oportunity I was given.

  22. I kind of understand Karoline, because I feel a Little bit uncomfortable around old people too. I think the reason why I feel uncomfortable is because I’ve never met any of my grandparents and I’ve never had much contact with old people. I think this project is really interesting and may be helpful for Karoline, because it helps understand old people better. Also, I feel like it allows people to see them as normal people and really understand what’s going on in their lives.

  23. Personally, I think that it is very sad how the documentary shows elderly people’s lives, their daily problems, their thoughts, their struggles, due to the fact that there we can see the reality of their situation. Despite of that, it is fascinating the way that the documentary also approaches to that, remembering that they are people too and so they feel as every other person does. My opinion of this chapter is that it can really show how we do not even realize we are forgetting that the elderly were in our position once, and so we have to start treating them as equals and not as old and boring people.
